White Mountain Pilates PMA is a members only boutique Pilates studio located in Lakeside, AZ. We are also a teacher training facility and have our own signature 450 hour comprehensive Pilates teacher training program. Pilates is traditionally done in a one-on-one setting due to it's intricate nature and we believe maintaining an individualized experience is how we can best serve our clients. Our Small Group Training accommodates up to 5 clients where we utilize the Pilates Springboard Tower (allowing a combo of Cadillac & Reformer exercises but encouraging the floor which is ideal for the average body), Pilates Suspension Method, Pilates Arc, Pilates Mat, Trigger Point and a variety of props. Private Training utilizes all of these things in addition to all large apparatus to include Reformer, Cadillac, Chair & Ladder Barrel. Sign up for group sessions on our app or call to set up private sessions. REALPilates.™ |
WHAT IS PILATES?
Pilates is a system of exercise and mental conditioning designed to develop core strength and a strong connection between one’s mind and body. Joseph Pilates originally named his method Contrology - a system of developing and maintaining control.
The key principles of Pilates are breath, concentration, center, control, precision and flow. Joseph Pilates’ work had a strong emphasis on breath. He found that by coordinating breathing patterns with movement, the benefit of the exercise is enhanced while increasing lung capacity. This is beneficial on so many levels. As Joseph Pilates said of breath, “Our very life depends on it.” The anatomical process of breathing is complex. In Pilates we design our breathing patterns to work with that process to the advantage of strengthening the body’s powerhouse, which is the core.
Core is something often misunderstood. People tend to think of the core as the abs when it is so much more than that (actually the “six pack” is not even a core muscle!). Though flexion is important (the act of “crunching” the abdominals), it is only a fraction of what makes the abdominals strong and when done without proper use of deeper muscles, flexion can actually be damaging. When stabilizing the spine and pelvis in Pilates, we work from the spine’s neutral position. When the core muscles are strengthened from the spine’s natural position in ideal posture, we are strengthening the core in the most functional way for everyday life. This is one of the ways that Pilates can help to eliminate low back pain and other common issues.
Building on a foundation of lumbopelvic stability, each exercise contributes to gaining core strength in addition to other targeted muscle groups of the position or movement. Pilates improves balance, flexibility, and coordination while strengthening and toning muscles. Due to its emphasis on decompression, Pilates gives relief to joints while strengthening and lengthening the deep, small muscles that surround them.
Pilates will enhance every physical activity whether labor or sport. Pilates can also assist in rehabilitating the body post injury. Pilates is suitable for any age and any fitness level as each exercise can be adjusted accordingly. Pilates is suitable for everybody, literally.

LET'S CHAT ABOUT THE CORE
The core is the powerhouse of the body. It is made up of four major muscle groups:
Transverse Abdominis | Pelvic Floor | Diaphragm | Multifidus _______ A strong powerhouse is needed to successfully complete all physically demanding tasks - even routine tasks such as lifting something heavy from the floor or bottom shelf. _______ When Pilates is executed properly, the core muscles should be gaining strength in each exercise. Because of this, the most common results people see from doing Pilates are relief of low-back pain and inches off of the waistline. |
